This is a #@%$^ of a problem; I fix it every time and forgets the fix; so its time to blog it.
Fix is as simple as creating a symlink to /usr/share/fonts/X11/ as /usr/share/X11/fonts, ie, from command prompt do
ln -s /usr/share/fonts/X11/ /usr/share/X11/fonts
